Short summer course in synthetic biology
Monday June 3rd – Wednesday June 12th, 9am to 1pm
A. Description:
● Hands-on research experience working on a cutting-edge research project focused on creating RNA-based therapeutics to kill microbial pathogens (inc. links to news articles)
● Hear presentations from experts in biotechnology and synthetic biology research
● Listen to panel discussions about careers in biotechnology
● Lunch provided
● 1.5-week course, 9.00 am to 1 pm
B. Micro-credentials gained through the course:
Molecular biology: The ability to isolate, manipulate, and sequence DNA are critical methods in research, medicine, and biotechnology. Participants will receive training in analyzing isolating DNA and performing sequence analysis.
Synthetic biology. The ability to design DNA sequences to program cells is one of the foundations of biotechnology. Participants will receive training in modern methods to clone DNA and create new biotechnologies.
Biotechnology. Participants will gain an understanding of cutting-edge research in biotechnology and hear from experts about working in biotechnology industries.
Quantitative skills: Research relies upon the daily use of quantitative skills to prepare solutions, calculate concentrations, and perform data analysis. Participants will practice these skills through the completion of a research project.
Lab safety: Understanding and following lab safety precautions and responding to potential hazards is an essential skill for many industries. Participants will receive training and practice laboratory safety.
Teamwork. Working effectively in team-based settings is a critical professional skill. Participants will practice these skills by working as teams to achieve research goals.
Research skills. This microcredential acknowledges the individual's proficiency in conducting research, including data collection, analysis, and interpretation, to inform decision-making and problem-solving.
Science communication. Participants will hear from diverse researchers to develop awareness of different communication styles. Participants will practice active listening skills.
